The Great K-9 Debate

Do we or don't we?
I was talking to Chunk last night and told him how Colby fell in love with this dog we found roaming the neighborhood last night. (It was a weiner dog - that's how novice I am. I don't even know what they're called! LOL) We've talked and talked and talked about getting a dog for a long time, and K finally said last night, "It's really up to you because you'll be the one taking care of it."
That might've just put the nail in the coffin! LOL. So I've debated and debated (all night anyways) about it. We live in a neighborhood where the dog has to be on a leash at all times outside & our yard is smaller than Polly Pocket's Lavish Home. I wouldn't get anything that could wrestle me to the ground, but I don't want anything so small that Colby could smother with all his love & affection. . . so do we or don't we get a dog??
(and what is a GREAT, LOVABLE dog for a 6 & 8 year old boy??)
GIVE THIS K-9 NOVICE SOME TIPS!!! thanks :)

All right, here goes...I love dogs, but if you're going to have one in the house it REALLY needs to be trained. You and your kids need to take classes. I think that although you would be taking care of it the most, this would get them more on board.
Research the type of dog that would be best for your family. Bigger dogs are more gentle (in most cases), but are going to need to be walked and exercized more. Smaller dogs (or what I like to refer as yappy dogs) are high-strung (in most cases), need a lot of attention and are smaller than Colby. Research breeds of dogs, find ones that YOU DON'T want and then go adopt a mutt that doesn't have those breeds in him. Bonus of adoption: they know a bit more of the dogs disposition from previous owner or their own experience with the dog. Check with the local Humane Society to see when they have their adoption days (when a bunch of animal shelters bring their dogs to the Humane Society) because there will be more choice. These are usually outside. They'll let you take the dogs out of their cages, take them for a walk on the lawn, play with them, etc. My family (that I grew up with) never went wrong with a mutt.

Here are some links I found--
http://us.eukanuba.com/EukGlobal/GLOBAL/en/jsp/breed/BreedUniversity/BreedUniversity.jsp#/EukGlobal/en/dog-breed-selector
and

I love my dog, as you may know. He puts up with A LOT. He does not put up with other kids as well as Ethan, but Ethan deserves biting on an hourly basis and Jake refrains. Puppies are great and cute-- nice too, so they can grow up getting used to your kids (like Jake would be nicer to Colby, if he lived with him). If you adopt, you will have to get to know the dog's personality. If you are not wanting to potty train, there are great dogs adverstised on KSL.com or the newspaper.
A lot to think about, but I just think there is nothing like having a dog around. It is, on some levels, like having another kid around, which is good and bad. A lot of work, but worth it in the end :).
